On 29 October Conservative Leader Iain Duncan Smith lost a motion of confidence by 90 votes to 75. The following day Michael Howard announced his candidacy while others stood aside to allow a quick 'Coronation'. Michael Howard was 'crowned' leader on
6 November - the day on which IDS's novel, The Devil's Tune, was published.
