David Cameron with Chloe Smith in celebratory mood following the election results on 24 July.

The By-election was triggered by the resignation of the popular Labour MP Dr Ian Gibson in protest at his de-selection (many thought unfairly) over the parliamentary expenses scandal affecting most parties.

• 13,591 Conservatives (Chloe Smith, aged 27)
• 6,243 Labour (Chris Ostrowski)
• 4,803 Liberal Democrats (April Pond)
• 4,068 UKIP (Glenn Tingle)
• 3,350 Green Party (Rupert Read)
• 953 Put an Honest Man into Parliament (Craig Murray)
• 941 BNP (Robert West)
• 428 Five 'Others'
